About the symposium

The 34th edition brings the hydraulic machinery and systems community to Kathmandu University, Nepal.

Welcome to the 34th IAHR Symposium

34th IAHR Symposium on Hydraulic Machinery and Systems will be hosted by Kathmandu University in Dhulikhel, Nepal, in 2028. Exact dates, the official theme, and participation details will be announced.

Advancing hydraulic machinery and systems

IAHR 2028 is a meeting place for researchers, engineers, designers, manufacturers, operators, and students working with hydraulic machinery and its associated systems.

The symposium offers an opportunity to exchange research, discuss engineering challenges, and connect academic work with practical experience. We look forward to welcoming the international hydraulic machinery community to Kathmandu University.

Background

IAHR and the symposium series

IAHR is the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research. Within the association, the IAHR Committee on Hydraulic Machinery and Systems supports knowledge exchange on hydraulic machines and connected systems.

The committee's symposium series connects industry and academia. Its event record includes the 32nd symposium in Roorkee, India, in 2024 and the 33rd symposium in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, in 2026. IAHR 2028 is the 34th edition.

Nepal: hydropower opportunity and resilience

Hydropower is central to Nepal's ambition for cleaner energy and economic development. Its steep river valleys also bring difficult operating conditions. Nepal is highly vulnerable to climate impacts, and floods and landslides have repeatedly damaged communities, transport links, and hydropower infrastructure. The World Bank's account of Nepal's 2021 disasters illustrates the consequences of intense rainfall and cascading hazards.

This setting gives IAHR 2028 a clear reason to connect advances in hydraulic machinery with climate-responsive and disaster-responsive hydropower design. The conversation extends from turbine efficiency and sediment erosion to changing river flows, flood preparedness, and recovery after disruptive events. These priorities complement the symposium's established focus on hydraulic machinery and systems.

Our host: Kathmandu University

Kathmandu University in Dhulikhel, Nepal, will host the symposium. Its Turbine Testing Lab connects experimental work and numerical analysis with practical hydropower challenges, including turbine performance, sediment erosion, condition monitoring, and hydraulic machinery design. This research environment supports exchange between academia and industry. The exact meeting venue and local arrangements will be confirmed.
